Lyon have beaten Barcelona 3-1 to lift the Women's Champions League final for a record eighth time.

The French side entered the match as underdogs, as defending champions Barcelona had lost just once in a season that included an unbeaten La Liga-winning campaign.

In a pulsating first half, however, Lyon opened the scoring through a spectacular effort from Amandine Henry. The 32-year-old slid into a tackle and swiftly got up to collect the ball, cut inside, and curl a 30-yard shot into the top right corner.

Ada Hegerberg headed in a second for Lyon, notching her 59th goal in 60 matches. It was a fitting way for Hegerberg to crown her comeback season, having returned to Europe's biggest stage for the first time since her 20-month injury lay-off.

Lyon continued to run rampant and added a third when Barcelona struggled to clear their ball in their box, allowing Hegerberg to roll it across to Catarina Macario for the simplest of finishes.

Just before half-time, Alexia Putellas pulled one back for a shell-shocked Barcelona as they attempted to rekindle their hopes.

When the sides met in final in 2019, Lyon won 4-1 with Hegerberg scoring a hat-trick. It was a similar outcome on this affair as Lyon demonstrated their experience by controlling majority of the affair.

In the second half, Lyon frustrated Barcelona and ensured the Spanish side were unable to get into their usual rhythm. Barcelona, who had only lost once this season, were unable to find a breakthrough but came closest when Patricia Guijarro saw Barcelona goalkeeper Christiane Endler off her and chipped it from 40 yards out. Her audacious effort, however, bounced off the woodwark.

Lyon's victory means they have now won a record eighth Champions League title, while Barcleona were unable to repeat their heroics of last season, where they dominated Chelsea 4-0.
