Wolves head coach Bruno Lage says he'll welcome Adama Traore back into his squad if the winger doesn't join Barcelona this summer.
Traore has become a fringe player for the Spanish side in recent months during a half-season loan, playing only 79 minutes in La Liga since the start of March.
He is out of contract at Molineux in 2023 and previously turned down a substantial contract offer to extend his deal.
However, with Barcelona looking less likely to take up their £29 million option on the 26-year-old, there is a scenario where he ends up back with Wolves in the summer should he not secure a permanent move away.
Lage says: “All I can say about that, I don't have any problem with him. He's a good professional. After, it's about decisions, there are a lot of things in question, we need to understand what's best for the club and the player.
“If he started next season with us, it's one more player. He needs to work hard and I'm here to help him to be better.”
Is Lage frustrated that Traore could have been here helping Wolves instead of being sat on the bench for Barcelona?
“We never know (what would have happened),” he says. “The only thing I can say is, as you know, he started the season with good performances and after that, low period, not playing too much and also not good performances. Then with time and training, he gave us the impact we needed, the last games for us he did what we needed and scored goals and assists.
“We never know what he could give us if he stayed.”
Meanwhile, Lage says Wolves will have to replace a “top player” if defender Romain Saiss leaves Molineux after six years with the club.
Saiss, aged 32, is out of contract this summer and has recently suggested he may move on. Saiss has been offered a new deal but has offers from across Europe.
Lage added: “When we watch him doing a great season, score three goals, be the defender who plays more in front... (if) in the end he doesn't find agreement with the club... first we need to understand his role for six years and with me playing on the left.
“A difficult task because we need to replace a top player. It's not about disappointment. Now we need to find another one to replace him.
“I know they're talking, I know the club has offered a proposal and that Saiss is happy at the club, he likes working with us and his family like being here. But in the end they need to find an agreement.”
Lage also says that if Wolves don't qualify for Europe, which is now very unlikely with them being five points behind seventh-placed West Ham with two games to go, it shouldn't impact the club's recruitment too much this summer.
“Yes and no,” he says. “If you ask me if you want special players, the challenge is to play in the Champions League or Europa League, I can understand that. But if you find me the right player and he refuses to play at Wolves or in the Premier League just because we are not in the Conference League? I think no.”Wolves will welcome back Adama Traore if Barcelona don't sign him — Bruno Lage - The Athletic View Story
