Rebekah Vardy has confirmed she attempted to leak a story about the arrest of drink-driving Chelsea footballer Danny Drinkwater to a journalist at The Sun — but insisted it was a one-off.

Mrs Vardy, giving evidence at the High Court on the second day of the so-called “Wagatha Christie” libel trial, said she sent information on Drinkwater's arrest in 2019 to her agent Caroline Watt adding — in a WhatsApp message read out in court — “I want paying for this.”

Mrs Vardy, wife of Leicester City footballer Jamie, is suing Coleen Rooney for libel, with the multimillion-pound week-long trial under way at the high court.

Mrs Rooney, wife of Derby County manager and former player Wayne, has publicly claimed that Mrs Vardy leaked three stories from a private Instagram account to the Sun newspaper. Vardy denies the allegations.

Mrs Vardy was questioned over a number of stories she had allegedly leaked to journalists by Mrs Rooney’s lawyer, David Sherborne, on Wednesday.

The High Court heard that Mrs Vardy had written in a message that she was “fuming” when told by Watt that The Sun had already been tipped off about Drinkwater’s arrest.

“It was a fleeting thought and one that I didn’t think any more about it than when I just wrote it,” Mrs Vardy said of her message asking to be paid for the story.

The court also heard a number of messages between Mrs Vardy and her agent Ms Watt, including one exchange where Watt asked: “Babe, has Colleen unfollowed you?”

Mrs Vardy replied: “Omg I just saw. Wow, what a c**t. I’m going to message her.”

Both Mrs Rooney and her husband were in court as Mrs Vardy gave evidence.

Among other allegations, Mrs Vardy also faced questions on private information leaked to the media about husband Jamie’s former Leicester City team-mate Riyad Mahrez, after the Algeria international failed to report for training ahead of his move to Manchester City in 2018.

“Mahrez not turned up to training again. Lads are fuming,” read one message from Mrs Vardy to Ms Watt.

The agent suggested contacting a Sky Sports reporter with the information but Vardy insisted in court that the subsequent news stories about Mahrez had not come from her.

“It was just a gossip, that was all,” she told the court.

Mrs Vardy later wiped away tears as Mr Sherborne referenced an article which reported rape threats targeted at her daughter.

She was asked by Mrs Justice Steyn whether she would like a break but declined.

Asked again a few moments later if she would like a break, Mrs Vardy replied: “I don’t think it’s going to make any difference, to be honest.”

The case continues.
