Atlanta United and U.S. men’s national team central defender Miles Robinson suffered an apparent lower leg injury during the first half of Atlanta’s match against the Chicago Fire. Robinson was stretchered off the field in obvious pain, after punching the ground in frustration in what looked like a serious injury.

"I think it's going to be a bad injury," said Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda during his halftime interview. "I hope it's not. So let's see, let’s do the tests, but a very unfortunate injury."

If it’s a season-ending injury, Robinson would join goalkeeper Brad Guzan and midfielder Ozvaldo Alonso as players whose 2022 campaigns ended on a sour note. With designated player Josef Martinez still recovering from a second knee surgery, Robinson became Atlanta United’s most important player, even taking the captain’s armband from Guzan.

The 25-year-old is also a projected starter for the United States at this winter’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Gregg Berhalter has depth behind Robinson in Aaron Long, Erik Palmer-Brown, John Brooks, Mark McKenzie and Cameron Carter-Vickers. However, Robinson has experienced an almost meteoric rise on the international stage.

Before today’s injury, Robinson was set to star in his first World Cup.
