Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte has confirmed that defender Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season due to a hip injury.
Romero was not selected for Tottenham’s 3-0 victory against Arsenal on Thursday night as Conte said the 24-year-old has been unavailable because “he received a hit on his hip at the end of the game against Liverpool”.
Summer signing Romero has grown into an important figure at the back for Tottenham this season. After recovering from a three-month layoff due to a hamstring injury, the centre-back had been a mainstay in his side’s starting line-up, impressing with his imposing style of play.
When asked about the Argentine international’s absence, Conte added: “For sure, it (Romero’s injury) was a big loss for us but at the same time I want to praise Davinson Sanchez’s performance (against Arsenal).
“To have guys like Sanchez and Rodon in the squad, players who if they don’t play every game, they stay focused and work very hard. Then, when there is a situation when they have to play, they show they’re in fantastic form.
“It’s right to praise Sanchez for the game he played tonight.”
He added: “We understood in the last few days that Romero had a serious injury and has finished this season, because there are only two games to go and he has no time to recover for these two games.”
Sergio Reguilon is another player that will not return for the club this campaign, with Conte confirming that “he is out and not available for the rest of the season as there are ten days left”.
Tottenham have a quick turnaround as they aim to make a late push for a top-four finish. After Thursday night’s victory against north London rivals Arsenal, they take on Burnley on Sunday for a midday kick-off.
Harry Kane, who scored twice against Arsenal, reflected on the limited rest period, telling reporters: “We need to make sure we’re ready.
“It is a quick turnaround, but it was nice how we controlled the game the way we did in that second half today. I think that was important to reserve a bit of energy.
“It’s just about recovery, sleeping well, eating well, making sure we prepare well. Probably more so in the meetings, looking at the opposition, rather than on the pitch.
“We’ve got one week left in the season, so there’s no excuse not to go out there and give it everything.”
