The Pittsburgh Pirates are calling up shortstop Oneil Cruz, their No. 3 prospect, for Monday's game against the Chicago Cubs, the team announced Sunday.

Cruz, 23, initially signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015 as an international free agent, making his major-league debut with the Pirates in 2021. He played in two games, notching one homerun and three RBIs on a .333 batting average in nine at-bats.

At Triple-A Indianapolis, Cruz batted .233/.337/.424 with 35 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Cruz will immediately become the everyday shortstop and also will get occasional starts in left field. Starting shortstop Kevin Newman has been on the injured list since April 27 due to hamstring and groin injuries, and isn’t eligible to be activated until June 26.

Pittsburgh (26-39) is currently second in the NL Central.
