Phil Mickelson's heavily-scrutinized week at the U.S. Open is coming to an earlier end than he may have expected after the 52-year-old failed to make the cut on Friday at The Country Club outside Boston.

Mickelson sat at 11 over after his 36th hole, a shaky showing that started with an opening-round score of 8 over on Thursday (his birthday, no less).

“I thought I was more prepared than I was,” Mickelson said Friday. “The U.S. Open is the ultimate test. And you don’t really know where your game is until you get tested, and I thought I was a little bit closer than I was.”

Mickelson's week started with questions from the media about his involvement with the LIV Golf Tour and ended with the golfer's honest assessment of his performance on the greens.

“I really struggled with putting,” he said. “I’m struggling with the putter, last week and this week. I feel I’m certainly playing better than I’m scoring and I look forward to working on it.”

There are 16 amateurs in the field, and at one point on Friday, 15 were ahead of Mickelson on the leaderboard.

The legendary lefty's future in the PGA Tour may be shaky as he faces a suspension for his involvement with LIV. He will next dig into his bag at LIV Golf's second event in Portland, Oregon, later this month.
