San Diego Padres pitcher MacKenzie Gore left Monday's 12-4 loss to the Tigers with elbow soreness, manager Bob Melvin told reporters after the game.

Gore exited in the fifth inning with the team's athletic trainer after registering four outs. He replaced Sean Manaea in the fourth inning after the starter allowed nine runs on eight hits.

The 23-year-old left-hander said he felt elbow discomfort throughout the fifth inning, and that the team doesn't know what kind of elbow injury it is yet. The training staff will treat him based on symptoms for the next two days before they fly home and he gets a full examination.

"It wasn't that one pitch, which is hopefully a good thing," Gore said after the game.

Gore was one of the Padres' most highly-touted prospects entering the 2022 season and made his MLB debut in April. He posted a 1.50 ERA in his first nine major-league outings, then registered a 10.89 ERA in his next six, and was shifted to the bullpen days before the All-Star break.

“We just want to get him confident again in what he’s doing,” Melvin said earlier this month. “Once he starts throwing the ball over the plate consistently, then we’ll take a look at it again.”
