Ten days after he was designated for assignment by the New York Mets, Robinson Canó is expected to head to San Diego.

The Padres are expected to finalize a deal with the 39-year-old Canó on Friday, sources told The Athletic.

Canó missed the 2021 season after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, the second positive PED test of his career. In 12 games with the Mets this season, he hit .195 (8-for-41) with one homer and 11 strikeouts.

The eight-time All-Star was still owed $40.5 million at the start of the season, per Spotrac. Canó signed a 10-year, $204.26 million deal with the Seattle Mariners in 2014. The Mariners traded Canó to the Mets in 2018 along with closer Edwin Díaz in exchange for outfielder Jay Bruce, relievers Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista and then-prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn.
