Wide receiver from IMG (Fla.) Academy is the 11th commit in a class that ranks No. 2 nationally.
Ohio State landed one of its top targets Monday with a commitment from five-star Class of 2023 receiver Carnell Tate. A Chicago native who plays at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., Tate picked the Buckeyes from a list of finalists that also included Tennessee, Notre Dame and LSU.
Tate is the No. 28 overall prospect and the No. 3 receiver in the 247Sports Composite. He’s the first five-star recruit and the second receiver in Ohio State’s 2023 class, joining four-star prospect Bryson Rodgers.
Though Tate has long been projected to pick the Buckeyes, Tennessee gave it a good run and at times even looked like the leader from the outside. So count it as an impressive recruiting win for Ohio State and receivers coach Brian Hartline, who continues to stock top talent at the position.
Assuming he signs with Ohio State, Tate would be the fifth five-star receiver Hartline has landed since 2019 — joining Garrett Wilson (2019), Julian Fleming (2020), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2020) and Emeka Egbuka (2022) — and the 12th top-100 receiver overall in that stretch. And the coach will have a chance to add more as he sets his sights on five-star prospect Brandon Inniss and top-50 four-star prospect Noah Rogers. Rico Flores Jr. is another player who’s been high on Ohio State’s board.
The Buckeyes could sign four players at the position in this cycle for the second straight year.
Tate lines up inside and outside at IMG, with the suddenness to create separation in the slot and the ball skills to win when isolated on the outside. He might need to make some gains in the weight room before he’s ready to make a significant contribution. Still, with a long frame and an ability to play anywhere in the formation, Tate looks like another complete receiver prospect in the mold of what Hartline has historically brought into the program.
