Nottingham Forest have held talks with Union Berlin over the prospect of signing Taiwo Awoniyi this summer.

Awoniyi, 24, is keen on sealing a move back to the Premier League just a year after leaving Liverpool on a permanent basis.

The Nigeria international, who joined Liverpool in August 2015, was loaned out seven times during his time at Anfield before sealing a £6.5 million move to Union Berlin last July. He did not make a single competitive appearance for Liverpool.

Awoniyi scored 20 goals in 43 games across all competitions for Bundesliga side Union Berlin last season which has seen Forest express their interest.

The forward, who has been capped four times by Nigeria, has a release clause of €20 million (£17.2 million) inserted into his contract.

Liverpool will receive 10 per cent of the final fee if the transfer is finalised.

Nottingham Forest are also hoping to strengthen their goalkeeping department before competing in the Premier League for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Manchester United's Dean Henderson could move to the City Ground on loan with an option to buy.

Forest's current No 1 Brice Samba has informed the club he will not be signing a new contract and intends to leave.

It is understood Samba is interested in a move back to France with Lens, having helped Forest secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League.

Forest have since been looking at alternatives with Henderson, 25, an option, initially on loan.
