Cale Makar claimed the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in hockey at the 2022 NHL Awards on Tuesday. The Avalanche star totaled 28 goals and 58 assists this season while helping Colorado reach the Stanley Cup Final. The 23-year-old beat out Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman and Nashville's Roman Josi for the honor.
Makar ranked fifth among all NHL players in plus-minus (+48) and is just the fifth defenseman in the last 30 years to score at least 28 goals in a season. The former Calder Trophy winner (2019-20) becomes Colorado’s first Norris recipient in franchise history.
Earlier in the night, to no one's surprise, Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin took home his first career Vezina Trophy after a dominant season between the pipes. The 26-year-old was the clear favorite entering the night after posting a 36-13-4 record with a league-leading 2.07 goals-against average and .935 save percentage during the 2021-22 campaign.
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider won the Calder Trophy after an outstanding rookie campaign. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft led all rookies in assists (43) and power-play points (21) and was one of only three rookies, along with New Jersey's Dawson Mercer and Red Wings teammate Lucas Raymond, to play all 82 games this season. The 21-year-old also paced all first-year defensemen with 50 points. He is Detroit's first Calder winner since 1965.
Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews earned the Ted Lindsey Award, given to the most outstanding player as voted by the NHLPA. Matthews, also the favorite for the Hart Trophy, led the NHL with 60 goals this season, the most-ever by an American-born player. He becomes the first player in Leafs franchise history to take home the honor.NHL Awards: Cale Makar wins 2022 Norris Trophy as most outstanding defenseman - The Athletic View Story
