Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock are unlikely to play for Newcastle United again this season due to injury.

The midfielders missed Newcastle's 5-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad with respective calf and knee problems.

City achieved a comfortable victory following a brace from Raheem Sterling, with further goals scored by Aymeric Laporte, Rodri, and Phil Foden.

Following the loss, head coach Eddie Howe confirmed that neither Shelvey nor Willock are expected to feature during Newcastle's last home match of the campaign against Arsenal, or their final-day trip to Burnley.

Willock has been suffering from a knee problem for a couple of months, while Shelvey has suffered from a series of soft-tissue injuries in recent seasons.

Both are set to be assessed in the coming weeks, to determine whether any further treatment is needed to give them the best prospect of being available for the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff started in a midfield three for Newcastle in Manchester in Shelvey and Willock's absence.
