NIL collectives are subject to the same NCAA rules regarding boosters, the organization reminded its membership on Monday.

The Division I Board of Directors issued “guidance” to schools clarifying that long-standing rules prohibiting contact between boosters and recruits apply to groups of donors that pool money to pay players through NIL deals, otherwise known as collectives.

The guidance also serves as a green light for the NCAA enforcement staff to investigate potential violations of such rules. It is effective immediately.

Violations that occurred over the past 10 months may be pursued, the Board said, but only “the most severe violations of recruiting rules or payment for athletics performance.”

“While the NCAA may pursue the most outrageous violations that were clearly contrary to the interim policy adopted last summer, our focus is on the future,” board chair and Georgia president Jere Morehead said in a statement. “The new guidance establishes a common set of expectations for the Division I institutions moving forward, and the board expects all Division I institutions to follow our recruiting rules and operate within these reasonable expectations.”
