Michigan’s commitment drought is over.

Three-star tight end Deakon Tonielli announced his commitment on Sunday, giving Michigan its first commitment of the summer after a quiet spring on the recruiting trail. Tonielli, ranked No. 430 in the 2023 class in the 247Sports Composite, was among a large group of visitors on campus this weekend.

Tonielli, ranked as the No. 7 player in Illinois out of Oswego High School, fits Michigan’s preferred mold at his position as a 6-foot-6 tight end with a background playing wide receiver. He’s a fluid route-runner with soft hands who shows the ability to gain yards after the catch. Tonielli is playing wide receiver in most of his high school highlights and may need to develop as a blocker, especially with a lighter frame at 215 pounds. But he’s a natural athlete who should fit in with the tight ends Michigan has recruited in recent classes.

Tonielli is Michigan’s seventh commitment for the 2023 class and first since March. The Wolverines will be looking for that number to grow in the coming weeks, with defensive lineman Enow Etta and edge rusher Jaxon Howard among the targets who visited this weekend.
