Steve McClaren took part in a planning meeting held by new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and football director John Murtough earlier today, The Athletic understands.

The former Manchester United assistant manager, 61, was invited to the meeting held in Amsterdam which is an indication he could join Ten Hag's coaching staff.

Ten Hag's current Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag also took part in the discussions as potential Old Trafford incomings and outgoings were discussed.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage for Van der Gaag and talks are expected over McClaren’s role, with Ten Hag keen to add him to United's coaching staff.

The meeting was to discuss strategy going forward, with pre-season preparations well underway, and squad make-up. Signing a midfielder is a priority with United weighing up an approach for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong.

Murtough flew straight back to the UK following the conclusion of the meeting.

McClaren worked with Ten Hag at FC Twente and the Dutchman has proposed the former England manager as an addition to his staff.

At Twente, the pair finished second before Ten Hag left, with McClaren winning the Eredivisie title in 2010.

McClaren could now complete a return to United, where he assisted Sir Alex Ferguson between 1999 and 2001. He was part of the treble-winning team in 1999.

The experienced coach previously had success at Middlesbrough, winning the 2004 League Cup and reaching the 2006 UEFA Cup final, and has also managed Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers.

Ten Hag won his third Dutch league title with Ajax on Wednesday in what was his last home game at the club.
