Mario Gotze has returned to the Bundesliga after signing for Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 30-year-old joins the Europa League winners from PSV Eindhoven on a three-year deal.

He told Frankfurt's official website: “The club has a great foundation. From the stadium to the fans to the city, everything simply suits me. I'm really looking forward to my return to the Bundesliga. And what's more, we have the chance to play in the Champions League.”

Gotze burst onto the scene as a teenager at Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp and scored the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

But he endured a torrid time with form, injuries and health problems after starring on the global stage.

The attacking midfielder struggled to hold down a first-team place at Bayern Munich, drawing criticism from club legend Franz Beckenbauer, and his return to Dortmund was disrupted by a metabolic illness.

Gotze joined PSV on a free transfer in 2020 and scored nine goals in 47 appearances.

He had signed a new deal to 2024 last year but has now secured a return to Germany on a contract that runs until 2025.

Frankfurt finished 11th in Germany's top flight last season and beat Rangers in the Europa League final.
