The Seattle Mariners announced several roster moves on Friday, including their decision to option struggling outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A Tacoma.

Kelenic, 22, is batting .140 with a .509 OPS, three home runs and four stolen bases in 30 games for the Mariners. Kelenic was acquired in a seven-player deal with the Mets that sent Robinson Canó and Edwin Díaz to New York after the 2018 season.

His debut on May 13, 2021 came with a lot of hype, as Kelenic was a consensus top-10 prospect in Major League Baseball heading into that season. Kelenic put up a .096/.185/.193 slash line over his first 23 big-league games and was sent down to Tacoma, and he didn't fare much better after he was called back up to Seattle in July.

But Kelenic's production over the season's final month, when he hit seven homers with an .854 OPS, gave the Mariners hope that he'd take a step forward in 2022.

The Mariners also reinstated reliever Sergio Romo from the 10-day injured list and called up outfielder Steven Sousa Jr., who had five home runs and a .950 OPS in Tacoma.

Seattle begins a three-game series against the Mets on Friday at Citi Field. The team is 14-18 on the season, sitting a third in the American League West.
