Manchester City have announced that assistant coach Juanma Lillo will leave to become head coach at Al-Sadd Sports Club.

The Athletic understands that Enzo Maresca, who previously coached City's Under-23s, is one of the candidates to replace him.

Lillo, 56, joined City in 2020 after replacing Mikel Arteta, who departed to take charge at Arsenal.

The Spaniard played an integral role in helping City lift two Premier League titles and a Carabao Cup since he joined.

Speaking of his departure, he said: “My time at Manchester City has been one of the most enjoyable periods of my career.

“To work alongside Pep, his backroom staff and this group of players has been a pleasure and I hope to have contributed in a small way to the fantastic success we have enjoyed on the pitch.

“I wish the club the very best and hope they can achieve all of their ambitions moving forwards.”

The Athletic understands that Lillo is poised to sign a two-year contract with Al-Sadd, the Qatari club that was coached by current Barcelona manager, Xavi.

In an official statement, director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “Juanma has been an integral part of a team that has won back-to-back Premier League titles.

“It has been a pleasure working with Juanma over the last two seasons and everybody at Manchester City wishes him well in his new venture.”

Lillo has previously had stints as an assistant coach with the Chile national team and Spanish side Sevilla.

Last season, City won the Premier League and also got to the semi-final stage of the FA Cup and Champions League.
