Fabinho faces a race against time to be fit for Liverpool’s Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 28.

A scan has confirmed that the Brazil international suffered a minor hamstring strain in Tuesday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Aston Villa.

Fabinho will miss Saturday’s FA Cup final with Chelsea at Wembley and is unlikely to feature in Liverpool’s two remaining Premier League games against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, Liverpool retain hope that he could recover in time for the Champions League final in Paris. Much will depend on how he responds to treatment over the next 10 days.

His absence will be a major concern for Jurgen Klopp given Fabinho’s immense influence in helping Liverpool maintain a challenge on all fronts this season.

Fabinho pulled up holding his hamstring after over-stretching as he challenged Philippe Coutinho during the first half at Villa Park. Captain Jordan Henderson, who came off the bench to replace him, is set to play the holding midfield role in his absence.

On Tuesday, Brazil named Fabinho in their squad for next month’s internationals against South Korea and Japan.

Their physical trainer Fabio Mahseredjian said: “We don’t have all the information yet but we are optimistic that he will reach the Champions League final.”
