Liam Cooper could return for Leeds against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
The defender was injured in the warm-up against Manchester City at the end of last month and missed last weekend's defeat to Arsenal.
Jesse Marsch had been optimistic about including him at the Emirates, but he now believes his captain will be fit for a crucial game in Leeds's bid to stay in the Premier League.
Marsch said: "Liam Cooper — last time I said he would be ready, trained day before and had small reaction leading to the match and we felt it was prudent he not push himself with the possibility we could lose him.
"I believe, he trained a bit yesterday. After that and now into this next phase he is better.
"I believe he will be available."
However, he said Patrick Bamford would only return to team training later in the week.
Leeds are 18th in the Premier League, on level points with Burnley in 17th but with a significantly worse goal difference.
