Wolves have a "massively important" rebuilding job in the transfer market this summer, head coach Bruno Lage says.
The team look likely to finish in the top half of the Premier League but Wolves' form has tailed off dramatically in recent weeks with just 10 points from 12 games, having earlier been threatening the top four.
Lage, who will be back in the dugout for Sunday's game against relegated Norwich at Molineux having missed the last two matches with COVID-19, was asked at Friday's pre-match press conference how big the rebuilding job is ahead of next season.
"It's massively important," he says. "I can link your question with what I'm feeling in this final third (of this season). At the end of February, 40 points, special players from the past (Pedro Neto, Willy Boly and Jonny Castro Otto) returning from big injuries and we have the feeling these guys can give the energy we need to finish the season in a good way.
"After that, we miss (through injury) Nelson Semedo, Ruben (Neves), Max (Kilman) and (Romain) Saiss, Daniel (Podence). Also important was the first eight months of work. These players work a lot.
"When you look back, you see a great season, especially the defensive line, they did all year because they work hard. It's not about the quality of the other guys who play, it's about the work. So we're missing the coordination of the back line, not because of the quality of the players (replacing them), but because of the time they worked with us; Max, (Conor) Coady, Saiss, with Semedo, (Fernando) Marcal and Rayan (Ait-Nouri). From five, we don't have three.
"For the summer, some players will go, for sure. We can feel it.
"We have gaps we need to fill. It's going to be a busy period. Everyone wants the best for the club. Next year is also going to be very hard; we have the top six and West Ham in front of us, and other teams are preparing big budgets to improve their squads. To continue at this level we need to rebuild and build a strong team, to continue to play in this way and change a bit the philosophy of our play."Lage: Wolves have 'massively important' rebuilding job in summer transfer window - The Athletic View Story
