Another member of Manchester United's academy is leaving the club, with Justin Cochrane set to be appointed as a first-team coach at Brentford.

Cochrane only joined United last summer as head of player development and coaching but wants to make the move to senior football.

The opportunity for Cochrane to work with Brentford manager Thomas Frank in the Premier League has convinced him to depart

United's youth set-up. He will be an extra member of Frank's backroom team.

Cochrane was part of the staff overseeing United's FA Youth Cup win in May and his role will be filled internally by Travis Binnion, the lead coach for the under-18s who won that silverware. Binnion will continue to guide the under-18s.

Academy head Nick Cox said: “Naturally, we are pleased that Justin has been able to fulfil his ambition of working in a first-team environment.

“I am proud of the world-class learning environment that we have created for our staff and take great satisfaction in seeing them progress both within the club or through external opportunities.

“The changes implement an ideal blend of long-standing club personnel and outstanding external appointments as we continue to appoint best-in-class staff throughout our world-leading youth development system.”

Cox told The Athletic how he had persuaded Cochrane to leave his job as head coach of England under-17s to join United. Cochrane, who had previously worked with Kieran McKenna at Tottenham Hotspur, chose United last June instead of first-team club roles.

“I wanted to find the best possible person for that role,” Cox said.

“I had seen Justin present and had interaction with him through some of our players being on England duty. I was impressed with his approach, building rapport and connection with young people.

"I was also aware Brexit meant we would bring in boys from all over this country and he has his finger on the pulse. We had to work quite hard to get him here.

Cochrane follows Neil Ryan, Neil Wood and Alan Fettis out of United's academy. Ryan left for a role at the FA after 19 years at Old Trafford, while Salford City took Wood as manager after his work with United's under-23s. Fettis, a goalkeeping coach, joined Middlesbrough's first team.

Mark Dempsey, formerly a coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who moved to the academy in December 2020, will take charge of the under-23s.

United intend to appoint a goalkeeping coach, a phase coach, and a playing coach before the start of the season.
