Jack Cork is to remain at Burnley under new manager Vincent Kompany after agreeing a new contract with the Championship club, The Athletic understands.

Cork’s current contract had been set to expire this summer. The club and player have been in talks for a number of weeks.

The midfielder had the option of a one-year extension built into his previous contract, but Burnley’s relegation meant this clause was no longer active.

Sources say the player was always open to staying at Burnley, however, and his new contract is now set to be announced by the club this week.

The news will come as a huge boost to Burnley, who announced earlier this month that 14 players had left the club following their relegation from the Premier League.

Cork, 32, has been a first-team regular since his move to Turf Moor from Swansea City in the summer of 2017, making a total of 160 appearances for the club.

His last campaign spent playing outside the Premier League came all the way back in 2011-12, when he played all 46 league games in Southampton’s Championship campaign under Nigel Adkins.
