Ralf Rangnick has described Manchester United’s 4-0 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion as “a terrible performance and humiliating defeat”.
Graham Potter’s Brighton played through United with embarrassing ease, culminating in an 11 minute spell in the second-half when they put three goals past the embattled visitors.
Moises Caicedo gave Brighton the lead with a fine driven shot into the bottom corner after only 15 minutes, with United struggling to create chances for the remainder of the half.
Marc Cucurella slammed home in the 49th minute, before Pascal Gross shuffled past the defence to score a third soon after, slotting his finish past David de Gea after listless United resistance.
Leandro Trossard bundled a fourth over the line to put Brighton 4-0 up after only an hour.
The result confirms that 2021-22 will be United’s worst season in the Premier League era.
Rangnick said: “It was a terrible performance. From the first until the last minute it was not enough; we can only apologise for this performance and a humiliating defeat.
“(Monday's win against Brentford) was a different game, we just gave too much time and space. We were never in a position where we could stop them playing through our lines. We told the players be as compact as they could but we couldn't stop it.
“I don't think they ignored the gameplan but we weren't able to stop them. We gave them too much space and if you do that against a technically good team like Brighton, you will get punished.”
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes added: “What we did today, and I include myself in it, was not good enough to wear the Manchester United shirt and I accept it.”
United have only won 11 of their 27 games under Rangnick, losing seven. They have taken seven points from the last 21 available.
Their final game of the season comes at Crystal Palace in two weeks time, with the club aiming to hold onto seventh position in the Premier League.‘It was a terrible performance and humiliating defeat’ — Rangnick after Manchester United’s loss to Brighton - The Athletic View Story
