The top-ranked side in the world were deservedly behind at the break on an emotional evening as 25,000 fans at Parken Stadium paid tribute to Christian Eriksen, who is recovering from a cardiac arrest. De Bruyne came on at half-time, however, and turned the game around.

Leeds United's Ezgjan Alioski followed up his own saved penalty to hand a much-improved North Macedonia a second-half lifeline, but they could not find an equaliser despite goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saving Ruslan Malinovskiy's penalty in the closing stages.

Christian Eriksen to have heart starter fitted following cardiac arrest

Christian Eriksen is to have a device fitted to help treat abnormal heart rhythms after he suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday during Denmark’s 1-0 defeat by Finland.

Specialists have taken the decision to fit a heart starter after Eriksen underwent different heart examinations.
