The England men’s Under-19s squad for this summer’s European Championship in Slovakia has been selected, with Manchester City’s Liam Delap, Tottenham Hotspur’s Dane Scarlett and Chelsea’s Harvey Vale among the 21-man group.
Head coach Ian Foster has handed a maiden call-up at this age group to Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who had previously represented England at under-18 level.
Bynoe-Gittens, 17, moved to Dortmund from City in 2020 and made his first-team debut for the Bundesliga side in April.
England will play three group stage matches, starting on Sunday, against Austria, Serbia and Israel.
Should they finish in the top two in their group, they will progress to the semi-finals of the Euros.
Qualifying for the semi-finals of this competition will also see the England Under-19s book their spot at the 2023 Under-20 World Cup, due to take place in Indonesia.
On his selection, Foster said: “It’s extremely difficult to gain qualification for the Under-19 Euros. Only seven of the 53 nations in both the Qualifying Round and the Elite Round make the cut so we’re delighted to be here.
“It is particularly special for this age group as they missed out on the opportunity to represent England at an Under-17 Euros due to the pandemic.
“Over the course of the season, many players have helped us get to where we are now and that made the final squad selection very challenging.
“Each player that has represented the Under-19s this season has played their part in our journey to Slovakia. Those players who haven’t made the squad will no doubt be disappointed, but their England journey is by no means over, they will get opportunities in the future for sure.”
The England Under-19s have historically enjoyed great success at the Euros, winning the competition 10 times. Their last victory in this age group came in 2017, with a squad containing Aaron Ramsdale, Reece James and Mason Mount.
All of England’s group matches in Slovakia kick off at 7pm BST and will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
