French side Nice have condemned some of their own supporters for singing derogatory songs about Emiliano Sala in a Ligue 1 match on Wednesday.

Sala died in January 2019 when the plane he was a passenger in crashed in the English Channel. The 28-year-old was travelling to complete his transfer from Nantes to Cardiff City.

The pilot, 59-year-old David Ibbotson, also died.

Nice were defeated 1-0 by Nantes in the French Cup final on Saturday and the chant was heard on Wednesday night when the side returned to action against Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1.

Nice said it condemned the chant “in the strongest possible sense”.

“The club does not recognise its values or those of the entire red-and-black family in this unthinkable and abject provocation by a minority of its supporters,” read a statement.

“Nice sends its support to the family and friends of Emiliano Sala.”

Nantes meanwhile expressed its shock at the chant in its own statement.

“Nantes learned with terror about the chants made by certain Nice fans and can only firmly condemn behaviour that degrades the memory of Emiliano Sala,” the club said on Thursday.

Nantes coach Antoine Kombouare also condemned the chants.

“Human stupidity has no limit,” he said. “I’m outraged, these people have no place in a stadium. They should be banned, it's a disgrace. I feel for his family.”

Nice coach Christophe Galtier expressed his disgust at the chant after the match.

“I have no adjectives to describe what I heard,” he said. “We would like to offer our apologies to the family of Emiliano Sala and Nantes.

“We shouldn’t be hearing that in a stadium. If they're coming to insult the dead, then they should stay home.

“People sometimes say that what we see inside a stadium is a reflection of society. If that's our society then it's really f*****.”

Nantes retired the No. 9 as a tribute to Sala, who scored 48 goals in 133 appearances for the club following his move from Bordeaux.
