Eddie Nketiah has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal.

Nketiah, 23, was due to become a free agent at the end of the month, but The Athletic reported in May that he was on the verge of signing fresh terms at the club.

Manager Mikel Arteta said of Nketiah's new deal: “I’m delighted Eddie is staying with us. He represents what we are all about and all the values of the club.

“We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and continue to develop the great talent and person that we have in him.”

Technical director Edu added: “The foundations of this squad are built on young talent and in particular those who have come through our academy system. Eddie was released by another club as a young man but has always shown he has the attitude as well as the ability to become a top player.

“The fact he’s signed a new contract is an important part of our squad planning for next season and we’re all delighted.”

There had previously been an expectation that he would end a seven-year association with the north London club, and was coveted by numerous clubs, including Crystal Palace.

Nketiah made his first-team debut for Arsenal in September 2017. He spent half a season on loan at Leeds in the 2019-20 campaign before being recalled and establishing himself under Mikel Arteta.

The former England Under-21 international managed to break into Arteta’s starting XI towards the end of the season, dislodging the now-departed Alexandre Lacazette.

He finished the 2021-22 season by scoring five goals in his last seven Premier League appearances.

Nketiah will wear the club's iconic No 14 shirt next season, following in the footsteps of Thierry Henry.
