Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the 2022 PGA Championship, PGA of America announced Friday. Mickelson, the defending champion, was listed in the field released Monday, as was Tiger Woods.

The second major of the season runs May 19-22 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Mickelson has not played since finishing T18 in the Saudi International in early February. The 51-year-old has been ensnared in rampant controversy and criticism of his decision to align with a potential breakaway Saudi golf league. Mickelson skipped both The Players Championship and the Masters, and lost numerous sponsors.

Mickelson is currently ranked No. 58 in the world. His best finish in 13 tournaments since edging Brooks Koepka at Kiawah Island last summer is a T17 at the WGC St. Jude.
