Antonio Conte has said Tottenham Hotspur need to “spend a lot of money” or “hope for a miracle” if they are to reduce the gap to the teams at the top of the Premier League table.
Conte, 52, was appointed by Tottenham at the start of November with the club eighth in the table.
Spurs now sit fifth, two points behind north London rivals Arsenal in the race for Champions League football, ahead of a pivotal game against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
And Conte has said that he would like to emulate Jurgen Klopp’s achievements at Liverpool, but warned Tottenham’s board that doing so will require either “a lot of money” or a “miracle”.
When asked if comparisons could be made between his Tottenham side and Liverpool shortly after appointing Klopp, Conte replied: “I don’t know but if I was sure this type of situation can happen, I sign, you understand?
“But also the time for Liverpool was easier than now because when Liverpool started this work with Jurgen, they were a top team, but not in a way they are now, so consolidated with an important manager, always the same team, big investment, big money spent on the transfer market.
“They also had the right space to improve and reach this.
“Now, in my opinion, I am talking about this league, it is more difficult because the space is not so big. To reduce this gap, you need to spend a lot of money because you need to buy important players. You have to know this otherwise you cannot reduce this gap and hope always for a miracle.”
Conte also said, however, that he sees Liverpool as a “clear example” for his club.
He added: “For sure, if you want to create something important you need time, you need patience especially if you start to work with a team that start behind the top positions. It is not easy. You need time.”Conte: Tottenham need to ‘spend a lot of money’ to reduce gap - The Athletic View Story
