The Florida Panthers advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 1995-96 (when they made the Stanley Cup Final), with a 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals on Friday, winning the series in six games. Carter Verhaeghe scored the overtime goal, sealing the series win for Florida.

Verhaeghe, 26, has six goals and six assists thus far during the playoffs. The Panthers forward is tied with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid for most points in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

In just seven playoff appearances in franchise history, this is the second time the Panthers qualified for the second round. Florida (58-18-6) was the Presidents' Trophy winners, finishing No. 1 across the league in the regular season.

The Panthers will play the winner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning first-round series.
