Samsonov gets the nod after replacing Vitek Vanecek for the third period of Game 2, which he stopped all 17 shots he faced.
Washington Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov will start Game 3 of his team's first-round series against the Florida Panthers Saturday night, Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. Forward Tom Wilson will miss the game with a lower-body injury.
"He (Samsonov) came in and we didn't play very well in front of him, and he looked really good in there and comfortable," Laviolette said. "Like I said before the series, it's something that we've done this year is both goaltenders have had an opportunity and gone in and played well."
Samsonov gets the nod after replacing Vitek Vanecek for the third period of Game 2, which he stopped all 17 shots he faced. In 44 games played this season, he has a 23-12-5 record with a .896 save percentage.
Wilson played three shifts and only 1:21 in Game 1 against the Panthers in Game 1. The forward has 14 goals and 31 points in 83 career playoff games, all with the Capitals.
The series is tied at 1-1.
