Plaintiffs' lawyer Tony Buzbee announced settlement Tuesday, but didn't disclose terms
Settlements have been reached in 20 of 24 civil lawsuits involving sexual misconduct and assault allegations against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, according to Tony Buzbee, the lawyer for the plaintiffs.
“We are working through the paperwork related to those settlements,” Buzbee said in a statement. “Once we have done so, those particular cases will be dismissed. The terms and amounts of the settlements are confidential. We won’t comment further on the settlements or those cases.”
The lawsuits of Ashley Solis, who was the first woman to file suit against Watson, and three others will continue, Buzbee said.
"Ashley Solis is one of the heroes of this story," Buzbee said. "Her case has not settled and thus her story and that of the other three brave women will continue. I look forward to trying these cases in due course, consistent with other docket obligations and the court’s schedule.”
The 24 women filed lawsuits against Watson over the course of the last 15 months, accusing him of sexual assault and sexual misconduct during massage appointments.
Watson spoke to the media last week for the first time since March after a Browns practice and said, "I never assaulted, disrespected or harassed anyone."
The Browns quarterback, who signed a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract with Cleveland after being traded from the Texans in March, said he regretted stating he had "no regrets" during his introductory news conference with the team, a comment that "triggered a lot of people." But he continued to maintain he’s being wrongly accused. Watson is not facing criminal charges for these accusations.
Watson still faces a possible suspension from the NFL as the league investigates the allegations. The settlements have "no impact on the collectively bargained disciplinary process," the NFL said in a statement.
“I met with the NFL and answered every question truthfully,” Watson said. “All I can do is be honest and tell them exactly what happened.”Browns' Deshaun Watson settles 20 of 24 civil lawsuits; NFL says settlements won't impact discipline - The Athletic View Story
