Bristol Rovers were dramatically promoted to League One on goals scored after thrashing Scunthorpe 7-0 on the final day of the season.

Having not been in the automatic promotion places all season, Rovers required a five-goal swing to overhaul Northampton Town and climb into third.

With Northampton 3-0 up against Barrow after 45 minutes, that looked unlikely.

But after Barrow pulled a goal back Rovers knew a 7-0 win would take them up on goals scored.

Joey Barton’s side were only 3-0 up after an hour, but late goals from Antony Evans, Aaron Collins, and Newcastle loanee Elliot Anderson secured a return to the third division.

It was the first time Bristol Rovers have scored seven goals in a fixture since 1964.

The end of the game was delayed due to the celebrations of Rovers’ fans, with Barton and owner Wael al-Qadi forced to address the crowd at the Memorial Ground to call for calm. Fans invading the pitch with flares led to 18 minutes of injury time, with the referee warning of an abandonment if a further pitch invasion took place.

Forest Green Rovers were meanwhile promoted as champions after a late comeback against Mansfield Town, with Exeter City finishing second on goal difference after losing to Port Vale.
