The Tampa Bay Lightning stayed alive in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 5, bringing the series 3-2. The defending champs will host Game 6.

The Lightning struck first, with Jan Rutta finding the net at 15:23 in the first period. Colorado went scoreless through the first frame, giving Tampa Bay the lead at the first intermission for the first time in Denver this series.

Valeri Nichushkin, a pending free agent, scored his fourth goal of the championship series to tie the game at 5:07 in the second period. Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov quickly answered back in the power play at 8:10, giving his team a 2-1 lead for the remainder of the period.

Colorado's Cale Makar, the newly crowned Norris Trophy winner, scored at 2:31 in the second period to tie up the game at 2-2. It was Makar's third goal of the series and eighth of the postseason.

Tampa Bay pulled ahead at 13:38 in the third with a goal by Ondrej Palat, his third of the finals and 11th of the 2022 playoffs. The result held for the Lightning win.

Teams with a 3-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final are 33-1 in hanging on to win the title. The last team to come back from a 3-1 series deficit was the Maple Leafs, who beat the Red Wings in 1942.

Game 6 is Sunday at 8 p.m. ET and the potential Game 7 is set for Tuesday at the same time in Colorado.
